Professional Experience

David Holmes completed his undergraduate studies in philosophy and political theory at the University of British Columbia in 2009. He was subsequently accepted to the Peter A. Allard School of Law at UBC and graduated with a degree of Juris Doctor in 2014. While at law school, David was active with the Law Students’ Legal Assistance Program, a lawyer-supervised legal clinic which provided assistance to low-income individuals. Through his participation in the program, he was able to gain experience assisting clients in many areas, including at trial before the Provincial Court of British Columbia.

David also had the benefit of securing a placement with Pro Bono Students Canada at the Pivot Legal Society, located in Vancouver’s Downtown East Side. The placement provided unique insight into the ways in which one of Canada’s most marginalized populations is impacted by the legal system. David spent 2 years with the organization and contributed to efforts to address issues related to single-room occupancy hotels (SROs), deployment of K-9 unit dogs, and the use of municipal bylaws to manage homeless populations.

David recently articled for a seasoned criminal defense lawyer in downtown Toronto and gained valuable experience in all aspects of representing clients before the courts. In addition, he was able to continue to engage with low-income individuals through his participation in the Law Society’s “Lawyers Feed the Hungry” program.

David has trial experience at both the Ontario Court of Justice and the Superior Court of Justice. He has represented clients on a wide variety of charges, including weapons charges, sexual assaults, drug offences, and impaired driving prosecutions.
